Jerome Boateng was part of the first wave of imports to help establish Manchester City as a European force. Last night his right foot did them serious damage.
The clock had just ticked into the final minute of normal time when Boateng struck. The ball was bobbling dangerously around in City’s penalty area. There were chances to clear; none were taken.
It fell to Boateng just inside the area. He drew back his right foot and pulled the trigger. It was always going to take something special to beat Joe Hart. This was one shot he could do nothing about.
And it is a big one, make no mistake about that. The giant screens at the Allianz Arena spent half-time showing how hard it was going to be for the Premier League champions in Europe this season.
